Moped Types: Class 1 and Class 2

Important Information for Customers in the United Kingdom

We’re excited to welcome our UK customers to the Vässla community. Below you'll find everything you need to know when purchasing one of our electric mopeds from outside the EU.

Shipping, Duties & VAT

All orders to the UK are shipped DAP (Delivered at Place) with FedEx. This means:

  • You will receive your order within approximately 5 business days after dispatch.
  • UK VAT and customs duties are not included in the product price.
  • FedEx will contact you with payment instructions for these import fees before delivery.

Estimated Import Costs (based on a £1,572 moped):

  • Purchase price £1,572
  • Import duty (6 %) £90
  • VAT (20 %) £318
  • Total import fees £408

Note: Additional handling or clearance fees may apply from FedEx.

Please ensure you're prepared to cover these import charges. Vässla does not collect or pay these fees in advance.

We offer two types of electric mopeds, both of which are available to UK customers:

Class 1 (L1e-B):

  • Max speed: 45 km/h (approx. 28 mph)
  • Requires a valid moped or motorcycle licence
  • Must be registered with the DVLA
  • Insurance and helmet are legally required
  • Suitable for urban roads, not permitted on cycle paths or motorways

Class 2 (L1e-A or speed-limited version):

  • Max speed: 25 km/h (approx. 15.5 mph)
  • In the UK, mopeds without pedals (like EPA-1) are not classified as EAPCs, even if limited to 25 km/h.
  • This means registration, insurance, and licence are still required.
  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • May be ridden with an AM or P licence, or a full driving licence with moped entitlement.

If you're unsure about your licence category, we recommend checking the UK GOV licensing guide for up-to-date information.

Registration Process in the UK

Your EPA-1 moped comes with a Certificate of Conformity (CoC), which proves that the vehicle meets EU type-approval standards (accepted by the DVLA).

To register your moped in the UK:

  • Receive your moped and CoC documentation from us
  • Apply for registration via the DVLA by filling in a V55/4 form
  • Include:
  1. Certificate of Conformity (CoC)
  2. Proof of identity
  3. Proof of UK insurance
  4. Proof of address
  5. Registration fee (approx. £55)
  • Once approved, you’ll receive a V5C registration certificate and can fit your number plate
  • You’re now road-legal in the UK

More details can be found on the DVLA registration page.

If you have any further questions about shipping, licensing, or registration, our support team is happy to help. We're here to make your transition to electric mobility smooth, legal, and fully supported.
